Summary, etc In the modern globalised economic environment, business enterprises are guided by the consideration of profits only. Success or failure is judged by the amount of profits reported than by the means adopted to achieve such profits. In other words, 'end is more important than the means'. This lop-sided view has led to the collapse of several companies across the world, shaking the confidence of investors and other stakeholders in big corporate houses. The list of companies which have been liquidated or applied for bankruptcy is very vast and is growing day-by-day, the latest company to be added to this list is 'Satyam Computer Services' of India. All these events bring to the fore, the significance of long-term survival based on ethical values. The companies should always be guided by the ethical aspects in all their doings. Ethics involve drawing a line between right and wrong, good and bad, just and unjust and fair and unfair. These ethical values should get reflected in all the actions the corporates do, right from their vision and mission statements to the actual act of buying and selling of goods and services. In December, 2008, the UGC sponsored a two-day national seminar on 'Business Ethics and Human Values'. The selected papers presented during the seminar have been compiled in the form of this book with a view to disseminate the values of good ethics and good governance. It would serve as a reference material for the students of Indian and foreign universities and B-schools.
