Summary: Improving management practices has always been the key focus for many organizations in the core sector. This focus has been driven by the need to improve service levels, introduce new services to the customers, improve workforce efficiency, meet the demands of compliance regulations, introduce initiatives like embarking on information and knowledge management roadmaps, outsource non-core business processes and implement effective management systems. Given the demand for cutting costs in view of the worldwide economic crisis, these initiatives make much more sense, with restructuring and transforming the organizational functioning being the prime goal in any core sector business unit. This book is a collection of twenty nine edited articles resulting from the deliberations during the two-day national seminar held at the Department of Management Studies, Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, on 20th and 21st February, 2009. The seminar was based on the topic of 'Core Sector Management for Global Competitiveness'. These research papers/articles have been contributed by the management experts, policy makers, professional managers, and academicians addressing various core sector management issues and challenges. This compilation provides a clear understanding of how to continue streamlining current operations, transforming the business processes and in some cases, changing organization cultures to meet the goals of improved service levels and productivity. It has been hoped that the rich content of this edited volume will be fruitfully used by the management professionals, researchers, academicians and students as an effective reference material to meet their requirements.
