Factors Affecting the Financial Inclusion of SHG Members: An Empirical Study in Tripura

Self-Help Group (SHG)-bank linkage program was started with the objective of empowering low income groups, mainly emphasizing on women, to have access to and use the mainstream financial services for their upliftment. The present study attempts to explore the factors that have an influence on the use of financial services and products by the members of the SHGs. To accomplish the objective, the study has used primary data collected from 384 beneficiary members spread across 95 SHGs across the state of Tripura. 25 items representing the factors affecting financial inclusion were identified and put through data reduction technique, that is, principal component analysis that explains the interrelationship among the original variables. The study identified six factors that affect the financial inclusion of SHG members: suitability of financial products, ease of banking, physical infrastructure, economic status of the SHG members, IT infrastructure, and financial awareness.
