500 _aThe uneven pattern of the banking sector growth regionally has been assumed to be a source of disparity in the financial sector and one of the parameters of financial exclusion. The present study is an attempt to examine any decline in regional disparity in the growth of scheduled commercial banks in India in terms of deposits, credit, number of bank offices and population group-wise distribution of banking centers. Moreover, the paper seeks to examine the performance of different banking parameters between pre- and post-financial inclusion periods. An attempt is also made to understand the pattern of financial inclusion in Assam in terms of General Credit Card (GCC) and no-frills accounts in recent years. The paper found that although financial inclusion period showed some improvement among different banking parameters, the northeast region of India is lagging behind compared to other regions of India.
